10 features I wish Linkedin would build (or improve)
Season 2, episode 20
If you know me, you know I enjoy the Linkedin platform.
From my throwbacks, to my unhinged corporate humor (attempted humor*), to my core millennial experiences, and everything in between. (I promise I do use it for actual serious networking… for those who have been following me for a while. I’m not always the unserious corporate millennial that I am).
But there are some things about Linkedin that just don’t work for me. Maybe you too? Little things here and there that have a relatively big impact on my experience.
So let’s talk about it.
Comments experience: If I make a comment on a post, I do not want to be notified whenever anyone comments or engages. Yes, I can manually turn off notifications on the post, but why should I need to do that in the first place? At the maximum, it should at least be only for people you have as mutual connections. But even that’s excessive. If I want to re-engage, I’ll go back to the post.
Likes experience: Similar to the above, if I ‘Like’ a post, I don’t need to know that others reacted, or even commented. Same thing. Feels like overload. Please, Linkedin, offer other options!
Job postings: I only use Linkedin for job stuff if it leads me to the organization’s career page. Then I know it’s legit. But back to the initial reason for #3: I dont think it’s important the # of people who clicked apply on a job post. What’s the point? Give us more anxiety about even applying in the first place? Plus, how accurate is that? What are they actually measuring in that number?
Reactions: They are glitchy sometimes, on mobile especially. I’ll find myself reacting to my own comment, which isn’t correct. Anyway, Linkedin, fix these reaction glitches.
Who viewed your profile: I have mixed feelings about this. One the one hand, I see the upsell opportunity they have with the Premium accounts, but on the other, the platform is centered around connecting and networking, so shouldn’t they open this up just a little bit? Feels limiting.
Creator program: Linkedin should pay creators for posting on the platform. I don’t know the first thing about the creator economy, but there’s gotta be a way. Someone, make that happen.
Search: Put search at the front of the experience. I’m not sure what that would look like, product-wise, but I’m always telling people to use search. It’s a really powerful tool on Linkedin and you can uncover so much. I also like the amount of filter options they have. But Search feels like an after thought; they should highlight it more and make it central to the experience.
Linkedin Premium and college students: Make Linkedin Premium free or at a discount for college students. I know there are some perks out there through campus partnerships, but from Linkedin directly, they should give students access to Premium while the student’s in college.
Messaging: It’s clunky, annoying, InMail this, InMail that. I wish we could turn messaging off, to be honest, which probably sounds counter to what I shared in #5, but I just don’t like the messaging experience.
More gamification: I’d love to see more. From a content creation standpoint, earn badges along the way at various milestone. Take a page out of Duolingo’s book; keeping you engaged along every step of your journey, in a fun, personalized, gamified way.
So those are my 10. What are some of your must-haves or must-fixes for Linkedin? What do you love? What do you not love?
Thanks for reading and for being here. I don’t take for granted that you care what I have to say. Or even if you don’t care, and you’re still here; thanks for being a fan anyway. ❣️
