Career hot takes: Job descriptions

Wish lists

Job descriptions are wish lists.

It’s what the company hopes to hire, but rarely will they find someone who checks every box; particularly in a specific line of work that is not as cut and dry as, say, science and math-based positions.

Reflecting on my career, there hasn’t been a job where I met 100% of the qualifications. In fact, sometimes, they’d make edits to the job description to make it work for my specific experience and skills.

I take JDs with a grain of salt. There’s always room for conversation and negotiation. If they want you, they want you.
