I basically shipped vegetables

The unexciting stuff, but the important stuff. Vegetables.

We may not be too thrilled about them sometimes, but we gotta eat our veggies!

We’re halfway through season 6, where I’m dedicating the season to writing more about my app, careerlobby. The learnings, the updates, the experience, the frustrations, all of it.

I recently shipped what is arguably the most important part of the app; Moderation. After all, it’s a community-based app, so more moderation features are necessary. You know, the unexciting stuff, but the important stuff. The vegetables.

Now on careerlobby you’ll see a more actions menu to the right of someone’s post; three dots more specifically. Click that. Report a user if you feel the need, based on what they’ve shared. It will remove their content and be sent to the admins to review in the interim. Mute someone if you wish to no longer see them in your feed.

Careerlobby is still early enough that I don’t anticipate these kinds of issues coming up for my users, but you gotta be ready! I always say that bad apples in spaces like this are inevitable. So I built for those moments.

Alongside Report and Mute, I also built a content filtering system to keep hateful language off the platform. If the system detects this language it will not let you proceed. Full stop.

With moderation tooling in place, I cleaned up a few other things too:

• On the mobile experience, there is no longer that weird scroll behavior where it was hard to get to the bottom to see the menu items. And on the same token, the menu items on mobile, once selected, are highlighted, so it’s clear which page you’re on within the app on mobile.

• I’ve also improved notifications. Before, nothing would happen really, when you clicked on a notification. It would just open up the main feed page. Now, a modal pops up, showing the exact place where that notification came from. It needs a bit more clean up and design work, but hey, it works as a v1!

I also continue to share jobs on The Board (which you can do too!).

What’s next? Well, a few more features around notifications, a few design tweaks, and some more brainstorming.
