In June, I started something new, scary, and unknown
Season 3, episode 1
I write this on day 5 of PTO. It’s been a week of relaxation, random assortment of errands, house things, dog things, and just doing absolutely nothing. That counts too. Doing nothing is something.
I even took PTO from Linkedin. As much as I love you linky, breaks are good.
I’ve also decided this is the start of season 3. The previous newsletter was Season 2, Episode 20, and twenty just felt like a round enough number to cap off Season 2. So, hello Season 3.
Four months ago, I started something totally out of my element and comfort zone. I started putting myself on camera. More on that below, but dang, I still hate my voice on recording. That cringe never gets old.
Let’s dive in.
I’m on Tiktok. I’m on YouTube. And about a week ago, I made my way back to Twitter (it’s Twitter forever). I know, I know. There’s a method to the madness though. Also, I feel like I’m back in 2009 tweeting my every thought on my way to my Spanish Lit class in college. What a time to be alive.
So why did I do this? I’m not totally sure I have a super well-composed answer for you, but I felt inspired to give it a try, no matter how uncomfortable I knew it would be. I was also looking for a new creative outlet. Following so many insightful and engaging creators I felt compelled to give it a try, even as a professional scroller and lurker. We’ve all been down those internet rabbit holes.
So on June 29th, 2025, I set up my camera and just started talking to the camera. I knew I wanted the page to be about career, work, being a millennial, my dog, and other random things. But mostly those topics. Since then, I have posted 1-3 videos every single day. In fact, I recently crossed the 400 video milestone, which is wild.
I had actually started a Tiktok page for my dog when I first got him in 2021, but that never saw its way through for whatever reason. This new page is the same account, just re-branded.
Is it crazy to say that I have actually ….enjoyed this? It’s kinda fun sharing your thoughts, POVs, experiences, and insights. After all, I love building community. It’s been fun to build community in my own little corner of the internet. I haven’t blown up or gone viral or anything like that, but that’s not my intent. I just want to start conversations, be silly, include my dog (he demands it), and create community. I think my most-viewed video is about 6K views, where I showed this AIM away message generator. Any content related to the millennial experience usually does well.
I’ve also experimented with a few series. It’s a good approach because it holds me accountable to share/post, but also brings people back (at least that’s the goal) because they know to expect the content. Right now, I’m in the midst of a 100 day challenge series where I am asking a career/work-related question and inviting people to contribute their thoughts in the comments. I just posted day 63. I’m also in the midst of a mini series where I’m sharing things I wish I would have learned in my 20s. Career-focused, with little tidbits of life advice here and there. Early on, I did ‘dog walk talks’ which was super cringe, but hey, yolo. Anything else I post (non-series) is just a one-off thought I want to share, or I am replying to a comment as a video (great content strategy, by the way).
When I started posting on TikTok, I also decided I would cross-post to YouTube shorts. Why? Mainly just for reach, but to also see how it performs. Sure it’s duplicative (but there are also some Youtube-only videos here and there), but why not? The platform’s available, and there’s an audience, so I went for it. Who knows, one platform could be better than the other. I don’t plan to choose just one of them down the road per se, but in any case, it helps with reach and I’m experimenting with more platforms. I just crossed the 200 subscriber count the other day; 200 people is a lot of people! (to me, at least). On Tiktok, while my follower count is above 1K, it’s technically about 250-300(ish) as far as this new approach is concerned (as of June 29th). The other 1K was from when it was just a dog account lol. Nonetheless, nice to see those followers kinda still care anyway? Or maybe they’re bots. Who knows, idc. I’m just happy that at least 1 person cares what I have to say. LOL
I actually hinted at this in Season 2, Episode 5, back in July, but I wanted to just let it unfold naturally first. I also wanted to force myself to stick to something for a little while too. But hey, if you found me organically though, cool!
If you’re considering a new medium or something similar, just do it. Please just do it. Flops are inevitable (I would know; I still know, believe me), so throw that out the window, because that’s a given regardless.
I won’t keep you waiting any longer. The “Let’s connect” link below is now updated, so if you care, you can check things out.
Thanks for reading and for being here. I don’t take for granted that you care what I have to say. Or even if you don’t care, and you’re still here; thanks for being a fan anyway. ❣️
