We need to talk about the McFlurry spoon
Season 7, episode 3
If there is anything I’ve learned about posting content online (in whatever format; text, video, whatever), it’s that there is an audience for anything.
I started posting videos online in June 2025, which included TIktok and corss-posting to Youtube shorts. Then later that year I started cross-posting to Instagram reels. 14mo in, believe it or not, I don’t think I’ve cracked the code on how to do this quite yet, but what I do know, is that you can really build community around anything, no matter how niche it might be.
I thought it would be fun to list my top 5 videos, by views, across Tiktok, Shorts, and Reels, and see what folks have responded best to over the last 14 months. What I find most interesting about these numbers is how vastly different they are. Probably has to do with algorithms and such, but I still don’t know what an algorithm is, so I’ll just leave that part to the experts. Let’s jump in:
Tiktok
The magic bullet as the original binge watch: 164.4K views
Getting more specific with ice breaker questions: 141K views
Choosing your favorite Solitaire card design: 107K views
The classic cassette tape/aux cord tool for the car: 72.2K views
The “who had the book before you” experience in school: 63.2 views
Instagram reels
Lengthy Windows menu paths: 2.2K views
Getting more specific with ice breaker questions: 2.1K views
The iconic Mcflurry spoon: 2.1K views
The pipes desktop screensaver: 1.9K views
Youtube shorts
This week I hit my first 1K subscribers on Youtube, yay!
10 quick and simple Slack features to know: 24K views
How to build a workflow in Slack: 11K views
Connecting a Slack workflow to Google Sheets: 6.4K views
A cure for Sunday Scaries: 4.2K views
End of the work day, plus a dog: 4.1K views
Some crossover, some very random topics, but also some drastically different numbers.
This is proof that you can literally find your audience with anything. That McFlurry straw video was posted this week, and it made it into the top 5; c’mon! The McFlurry spoon design! And the magic bullet?! What a classic commercial; clearly it still resonates with people as is evidenced by it being my most viewed video ever, across all platforms.
Sometimes all it takes is something random, specific, but something relatable and memorable to land well.
And if you know me, you probably aren’t surprised to hear me say that this specificity extends well beyond video format; it works on Linkedin too. People are tired of hearing about what b2b sales taught them as they leveraged the synergies of the low hanging fruit, anyway.
I dare you to post a video, or two, or three, or hundreds. See what happens. Build your own little community in your own little corner of the internet. 🤳
Thanks for reading and for being here. I don’t take for granted that you care what I have to say. Or even if you don’t care, and you’re still here; thanks for being a fan anyway. ❣️
